Despite efforts by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to increase diversity, this year’s #OscarsSoMale—a riff off April Reign’s indelible #OscarsSoWhite campaign from 2015—shows that Hollywood’s preeminent awards ceremony still has a long way to go. But looking at the slate of pictures deemed “award-worthy” each year remains one of the many benchmarks we can use to measure progress toward inclusive storytelling.
At Mediaversity Reviews, in fact, diversity is the main thing we evaluate films on. Our grades take an intersectional look at not just technical merit, but gender parity and racial diversity, too. As we head into the 95th Academy Awards at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles this Sunday, March 12, let’s take a look at how its Best Picture nominees fare on inclusiveness. The average Mediaversity grade was a C+ (3.28/5), staying almost exactly equal to last year’s C+ (3.29/5), which saw films like Drive My Car and King Richard leading the pack.
