Mediaversity Reviews, the first website to evaluate movies and television on the basis of their minority representation, is launching its first foray into the podcasting world by partnering with Token Theatre, a podcast about diverse films hosted by Aditya Joshi. Joshi, along with producer Amanda Lewellyn, first launched the podcast independently, with six episodes released in Spring 2020.

Token Theatre’s first episode under the Mediaversity Reviews banner launched on August 4th, with Lai and Joshi discussing Lulu Wang’s The Farewell. Future episodes will be released weekly and will feature critics and artists from across the entertainment industry.

“Mediaversity Reviews was founded to bring light to major disparities in diversity across the film and television landscape and to highlight some of the incredible work being done,” said Li Lai, founder and Editor-in-Chief of Mediaversity Reviews. “This new partnership with Token Theatre will grow our footprint and amplify so many of these crucial conversations, bringing an increased focus to representation in film and television.”

“Token Theatre is a podcast about representation on film, but more importantly, it’s a place for artists from underrepresented communities to share and discuss the movies that have influenced their work. Films about minorities rarely get the discussion they deserve, and we wanted to change that,” said Aditya Joshi, the founder and host of Token Theatre. “I couldn’t be more excited to have found a platform partner who aligns so closely to our mission. Our hope is that this podcast is an ode to the nuance and depth of the movies of our communities, as well as a space to critically examine the movies that shaped our own self images.”

Token Theatre’s first six episodes, featuring artists like “Keep It” co-host Aida Osman and The Big Sick’s Zenobia Shroff, are now available to stream on the Mediaversity Reviews site, as well as major streaming services.

About Mediaversity Reviews

Mediaversity Reviews was launched in 2016 with a mission to diversify popular media — both onscreen and off — by elevating minority critics and assessing movies on their representation as well as their technical merit. The site has been featured in Variety, The Verge, and the Chicago Tribune, among others, and has been lauded for its commitment to the cause of representation in film and television.

About Token Theatre

Token Theatre is a podcast for artists from underrepresented communities to share and discuss the movies that have influenced their work. Each episode, host Aditya Joshi invites a guest artist to share a movie of their choice and engage in a wide-ranging discussion about the film’s themes, legacy, and impact. Future episodes will cover media from Get Out to To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Neymar, and will continue to feature a range of perspectives from filmmakers, writers, and artists of color. The podcast is hosted by filmmaker, writer, and musician Aditya Joshi, and is co-produced by Amanda Lewellyn.
